The approach to the City of Toronto's new lifeguard stands is both pragmatic and humanistic. The competition winning design successfully reconciles a diverse set of technical requirements for storage, signage, public safety, durability and cost while achieving an iconic design that appropriately conveys the quality of Toronto's swimming beaches.

As a strong vertical element on a gently sandy landscape, the distinctive form exists as a beacon to visiting patrons. Brightly coloured and easily recognized, the lifeguard stand allows users to immediately identify lifeguards on duty while providing a clear reference for security and orientation. They are constructed from galvanized and laser cut steel sheets with an integrated steel skid to allow for easy seasonal relocation.

Material, texture, colour and proportion combine into a striking design. This makes the new lifeguard stands emblematic, yet not intrusive of the city's waterfront.
